The Diversity of Ted Talks

I enjoy watching Ted talks, whether it's just to find out something new, something motivational or useful or just to laugh. So I was intrigued to find out some statistics about the variety of content available through TED.com.

This project involved on an analysis of a dataset of TED talks up to 21 September 2017 using R. The dataset was made available on Kaggle.

The code can be viewed at: TedTalks_Stats.R

I have presented the results along with the code using RMarkdown The RMarkdown code can be viewed at: TedTalks_Stats.Rmd

A summary of the results are outlined in my blog post, The Diversity of TED Talks

The information that I was able to glean through analysis of the dataset was:

  1. 1. The most common occupation of speakers
  2. 2. The TED Talk events with the most number of speakers
  3. 3. How long would it take to listen to all TED talks back to back? - around 25 days
  4. 4. The average length of TED Talk in minutes (using mean, median mode) - around 14 minutes
  5. 5. Who gave the longest TED Talk and what is it? - Douglas Adams, "Parrots, the universe and everything", at almost one and a half hours
  6. 6. Who gave the shortest TED Talk and what is it? - Murray Gell-man, "The ancestor of language", at just over two minutes
  7. 7. The correlation between duration, the number of views and the number of comments
  8. 8. Who are the most prolific speakers (in terms of number of TED Talks)
  9. 9. What the average number of talks per speaker (using mean, mode and median)? - 1880 speakers gave 1 talk
